Congrats to Gaming’s new Hall of Fame Inductees
Congratulations to Pokemon Red and Green, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter II, Halo: Combat Evolved
Recently is was announced that the video game hall of fame announced their new inductees. After the votes were counted it was decided that Donkey Kong, Street Fighter II, Halo: Combat Evolved, and Pokemon Red & Green were in! To be honest I must have been living under a rock or something because I didn’t even know there was a video game hall of fame. I all honesty the hall of fame is run by the “Strong National Museum of Play” in Rochester, NY. The games were chosen because they all had a huge impact on gamers and world culture. This was the third round of games inducted into the hall of fame so far. The full list of games considered for induction were the following:
- Final Fantasy VII
- Donkey Kong
- Pokemon Red and Green
- Microsoft Windows Solitaire
- Mortal Kombat,
- Street Fighter II
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Resident Evil
- Tomb Raider
- Wii Sports
The ones that were chosen have all had a huge impact on the video game industry, society and pop culture. They covered multiple decades and were popular in many countries.
Donkey Kong was introduced in 1981 and has been Nintendo’s most popular game to date. Without Donkey Kong there would be no Super Mario Brothers and all the games that spawned from that. Up until Halo was created the most successful first person shooters were played on a PC. Halo revolutionized the FPS genre on gaming consoles. It had a massive effect on what developers did with game consoles after it became so popular. Street Fighter II was developed by Capcom in 1991. The game boosted arcade play in the 90’s and many more sequels and one on one fighting games were developed after its success. Capcom sold thousands of Street Fighter II arcade games and even more of it’s Champion Edition units. It literally owned arcade gaming in the 90’s.
Some other games that have been inducted in past years have been: Doom, Grand Theft Auto 3, The Legend of Zelda, Pac-Man, Pong, Space Invaders, Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Sims. There are more but these are just a few I saw. You can check out the museum’s website and see them all.
The World Video Game Hall of Fame was created in 2015. It considers all forms of games such as mobile, computer, arcade, console, and even handheld games. Anyone remember Coleco’s Football game? Loved that game when I was a kid! But I digress! The games it chooses are games that have a long period of success and influence on gaming, society, and pop culture. The Strong Museum is in Rochester NY and anyone can see the video game hall of fame on the museum’s second floor. So be sure to check it out the next time you are in Rochester!
