One type of app review I love to work is a game review. It combines the best of both worlds, games and iphone app reviews! WondaGems could be the long lost brother or sister of Bejeweled. Different colored gems combined with special gems that have special affects come together to make a fun, entertaining puzzle app. Each of the games by comparisson are different but there are some similarities. Each of the games are level based and each of them are as colorful as can be. Each of the games are puzzle games involving lining up some kind of jewels to clear the game screen. WondaGems couple possibly be one of the best Bejeweled replacements I’ve seen.
WondaGems ran perfectly whenever I played it. The game was fast, glitch free, and screens flowed perfectly from one screen to the next. Based on the iTunes app store page this app does exactly what it says it does. It’s a fun fast paced puzzle game.
Appearance and Playability
WondaGems is a very colorful app. The app has one main game play screen. On the screen is a game board with many red, yellow, pink, brown, and blue gems. Each of these gems are hexagons so they stack up next to each other nicely when all together at the start of each level. The users goal is to line the gems up vertically or diagonally into a set of 3 gems. It’s pretty easy to line them up because it only takes one swipe to match up 3 gems in a row. Each time a set of 3 gems is put together, the gems of that set disappear and more gems fall into place. The goal of each level is to line up the total number of sets for the level before the timer hits zero.
Occasionally when playing the user will be given special gems that either blow up a bunch of gems or take out all the gems that are the color of gem the user swipes into it. I’m not sure if there are more special gems than those two but I get the feeling judging from the description of the game that there are. I was only able to see the two during the time I played. Score and where you are in each game level is tracked at the top of each screen so it is easy to see what you need to do to clear the level. The timer is also located at the top of the screen for easy viewing while playing.
WondaGems has a very simple menu screen with new game, load game, more games, settings, and help. The setting screen is small and allows you to turn off sound effects and music. The help section gives users a very brief and to the point set of directions on how to play the game. The “more games” link opens a browser and tries to go to a website that gave me a “not found” error. This was the only real problem i had playing the app and it doesn’t really affect the game itself. When the game screen loads users are given the ability to play on a easy, medium, and hard level. Each level increases the challenge just a little bit by speeding up the timer for each level. Users will need to increase their speed to move forward with each level.
WondaGems is priced at 1.99 which is not out of line for a game like this. It’s definitely worth the two bucks and probably a few bucks more. I would definitely pay for this app and not think twice about the $1.99 price tag.
